Webdelayed recovery meant that GDP did not regain its pre-recession level until three full years after the recession began. This compares with just over two years in the 1981 cycle and 18 months in the 2008 cycle. The different speeds of recovery show why it is difficult to state categorically that one recession is more severe than another.
